1922 – George McCambridge worked for James McGlade and Co., a wholesale wine and spirit merchant in Belfast. March 1922 – George McCambridge got the job of
manager of Powell’s, the Four Corners in Shop Street, Galway.
3rd July 1925 – George McCambridge in partnership with Francis Brennan opened McCambridge, Brennan and Co. as a “high class grocery, provision, wine and spirit and bar establishment” at 38/39 Shop Street Galway. 1930’s – Francis Brennan left, and the shop was changed to McCambridge’s Ltd. The premise was renovated.
1950 – George’s son Pat joined the business. 1955 – George bought the premise outright from Mrs Denise Draw. 1969 – The shop underwent a major renovation.
1972 – The shop underwent another major renovation to modernise the premises and McCambridges opened the first off-licence in Galway.
1985 – Eoin, Pats son, joined the business. 2000 – McCambridge’s launched their first website. 2002 – Natalie, Pats daughter, returned to run the off-licence. 2008 – IT systems upgraded. 2010 – The kitchen was upgraded, adding a hot food counter and outdoor seating. June 2012 – Our restaurant, Upstairs at McCambridge’s, opened and the coffee bar was renovated. Since then, our sandwich bar extended, we
launched a new website and lots of other innovations have been put in place.
Food hall
Our Food Hall consists of a full grocery range, a large sandwich bar, a self serve salad bar and olive bar, a deli counter stocking the best of cold meats and cheese, a well stocked boutique wine and spirits section and a full coffee bar. We try to stock what you won’t find in supermarkets, and we love to support local Irish producers.
Sandwich Bar - We cater for everyone including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan. We do hot and cold specials. With loads of options and delicious breads to choose from McCambridge’s Sandwich bar is a
must for everyday lunch.
Salad Bar- We make all our own salads, available at a ‘serve yourself’ salad bar. There are the popular
everyday salads and a variety of others which regularly change. Broccoli, feta and hazelnut, baby tomato
cucumber and red onion, mixed leaves with carrot and beetroot and pesto pasta with olives are just a few of the options.
Cold Meats and Cheeses- We prepare all our d and boiled cold ham cuts from scratch and our international selection includes salamis, Italian prosciutto, Jamon Iberico, saucisson sec and many more choices from around the world. We have an Irish & international cheese selection to choose from.
Breads & Pastries - The aroma of bread and pastries, freshly made and baked every day, will titillate your senses. Come in, we promise you won’t be disappointed.
Tucked beneath the sweep of our spiral staircase you’ll find our coffee bar where our first class Baristas are waiting to make you that perfect Latte, Cappuccino, Con Panna, Flat White, Macchiato, Americano or Espresso.
Our Hot Chocolate is made from chocolate chips (no powder in sight!), our herbal teas come from Solaris and our traditional tea is always and only Campbells Finest Loose leaf. You can enjoy all of this at our counter, on-the-go or relaxing outside in our beautifully appointed seating area.
McCambridge’s opened the first off-licence in Galway and that tradition of excellence and innovation is reflected in our wide range of the very best available spirits and wines. Experience our handpicked selection of wines from around the world including Chateau Marjolet, Leoville Barton and Chateau Calon from
France, along with an extensive choice of Italian, Spanish and New World wines. Irish Whiskey is our speciality, and we stock everything including Bushmills, Redbreast, Green and Yellow Spot, Connemara, Teelings, Powers and Jameson. We also stock a range of Japanese, Scotch and American whiskeys. On top of our range of whiskeys, we also have large range of Irish Gins including the excellent local Micil Gin, spirits and liqueurs. Craft beer is another speciality– and we have the best Irish and international selection in town.
